Azores and Back Yacht Race 2011

After Sam White and Richard Raistricks efforts on the race to the Azores the race home will see Sam's first solo ocean race. The competion comprises some of the finest sailors in the UK and thanks to a great race here Sam is still well within sight of a podium finish. This is Yacht racing at its best and of course anything could happen in the next 1250 miles.

The sun sets on the first day of racing..

The sun has just set and the wind ha dropped to well below 10 kts on the first day of my epic race. The day didn't quite start i the way i had wanted, having rounded the first mark in a very respectable position I had to gybe the boat, the wind was around 20kts adn I had reduced the amount of sail I was carrying by way of 2 reefs in the mainsail. during the gybe the mainsheet parted company with the boom giving me no way of controlling the angle of the sail to the wind. Unfortunately the only way to solve the problem was to drop the mainsail whilst i fixed it. In doing so i watched as 3 boats overtook me. Once fixed it didn't take long to catch up with them and with 24kts of wind from the north we headed west with good boatspeed and plenty of sunshine.
I tried to get straight into my solo routine so made took a few 20 minute naps during the afternoon. as the wind started to die off I changed my headsail to a more powerful one and so far it has kept me up with the fleet. As i type i am in good company- Elixer, Taika, Truant and Fan Fan are all within sight. Only 3 miles separates us all. All that is left for the night is to settle in and keep chasing the others.
