Azores and Back Yacht Race 2011

After Sam White and Richard Raistricks efforts on the race to the Azores the race home will see Sam's first solo ocean race. The competion comprises some of the finest sailors in the UK and thanks to a great race here Sam is still well within sight of a podium finish. This is Yacht racing at its best and of course anything could happen in the next 1250 miles.

Two hours into the 2nd leg and our first lucky escape...

The start saw us flying the spinnaker with 16 kts up the chuff, 5 mins in and the wind had freshened to 20+ kts. We had made the decision to drop the kite and put up a smaller one instead but unfortunatly before we had the chance another boat made us throw in a quick gybe however without the chance to gybe the kite first we were left in an arkward situation.
Just as we thought we had gained control of the boat a wave picked up the back and put us into another gybe. Dad was in the way of the main sheet and has taken hard blow to the neck. He is ok but thinks he may well feel it in a few hours.
That uncontrolled gybe wrapped the spinnaker quite badly around the forestay and at one point we thought we would have to cut it off and lose a few thousand pounds worth of sail. Luckliy afer about 20 minutes of wrestling we got it down.
We are now sailing with no spinnaker for a few hours to catch our breath and take stock. It's a long race so at first light we'll push hard again to make up for it. No real damage but a damn good lesson......
