Azores and Back Yacht Race 2011

After Sam White and Richard Raistricks efforts on the race to the Azores the race home will see Sam's first solo ocean race. The competion comprises some of the finest sailors in the UK and thanks to a great race here Sam is still well within sight of a podium finish. This is Yacht racing at its best and of course anything could happen in the next 1250 miles.

The crest of a wave...

As we approached the very top of the UK the wind filled in and gave us a 20 hour battle to the finish. With 18-25 kts the largest spinnaker we had was beginning to get too much. Time for a change. Out popped the smaller asymectric and we held on with a wild ride around Mucle Flugga and south down the East coast of the Shetlands.

Unfortunatly we took a casualty during this time, namely the mainsail. It developed a large rip and requires nursing back to port and some major work on arrival. If we cant get it fixed again we may have some issues finishing the race full stop.

The wind stayed at about 20-25 kts and the boat was coping but together with nursing the mainsail and a mammoth 16 hours previous hard graft, we have elected to leave the spinnaker down and have some time out to eat drink and get our breath.....
