Azores and Back Yacht Race 2011

After Sam White and Richard Raistricks efforts on the race to the Azores the race home will see Sam's first solo ocean race. The competion comprises some of the finest sailors in the UK and thanks to a great race here Sam is still well within sight of a podium finish. This is Yacht racing at its best and of course anything could happen in the next 1250 miles.

The day before and the bets are on.....

As the clock ticks the realisation sets in that we are not only here but ready. The boat is perfect and the race that we have both talked about, thought about worked towards for the past few years is about to start. All we have to do now cast away the lines at 10am tomorrow and make our way half a mile to the start.

After the gun goes at 12:15 we will be sailing in light airs to Eddystone rocks 15 miles south of Plymouth before turning west to the Scilly Islands. So far the wind forecast has changed 5 times in 2 days. The basics we know. There is a low pressure heading this way, for a time we will have light winds then the wind will pick up before dropping to virtually nothing. The game is to guess where and when it will do this then to be in the right place at the right time. Do we head out to look for wind or sail the shortest distance between the 2 points? Maybe flip a coin? Maybe a beer will help us decide, after all the only thing rests on that decision is the difference between winning or losing................
