After tacking out into a good breeze with less tide and watching us
claw our way in front of the group the wind started to drop. Because
of the direction of the wind although we could sail at 4.5 kts the
tide was pusing us hard the East. This meant no matter what we tried
the only course over the ground we could achieve was north south! As
the tide increased this became NE,SE. The options facing us were to
drop an anchor or risk going backwards at 2.5 kts. We dropped anchor.
The anchor didn't bite so we went backwards at 2.5 kts! After a time
the anchor finally held but we had lost over a mile. At this point it
was time to swap and my time to try and get some sleep.
Dad woke me after what felt like 5 minutes (I still have no idea how
long it was!) and said the wind was increasing.

You were doing 7 knots at 2pm, so things are looking better. Don't go too near the land because The Shed is only doing 3 knots on the other side of Salcombe.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to believe a 2000-mile race could have such a gripping finish. Go, guys, GO!
