Azores and Back Yacht Race 2011

After Sam White and Richard Raistricks efforts on the race to the Azores the race home will see Sam's first solo ocean race. The competion comprises some of the finest sailors in the UK and thanks to a great race here Sam is still well within sight of a podium finish. This is Yacht racing at its best and of course anything could happen in the next 1250 miles.

The Code Zero is our Hero!

At 1310 UK time we crossed the start line- at least 4 boats were in front of us. The forecast was not anything like the real thing- We were forecast a running start (ie wind behind) and in reality it was an into wind start. The wind had been varying a little but by the 10 minute gun it was clear the code zero was the way to go. (for non sailors it is a big sail but is very touchy about when it can be used- in the world of sails its a teenager, it as a teenager- a little stroppy but full of beans when it wants to be!)
As we hit the start line the wind had gone further ahead and we just couldnt hold it. after a slightly messy drop we got back up to speed and headed out into the blue. The next decision was taken for us, there was a tanker in our path and most boats tried to pass in front of it, we had no choice but to  go behind it as we were now to low on the wind to do anything else. This worked in our favour though as we made up the lost ground and were hunting down leaders. further offshore we tried the code zero again but again it wouldnt play nicely! Persistence is the key though and after a few frustrating hours battling very light winds we gave it one last shot-hey presto the conditions are perfect for it and we soon reeled in the leaders.

8 hours in- caught up with some of the earlier starting boats and as I type we boatspeed, a sunset and as far as I am aware are leading the class. It is very early days yet but even then its better than being at the back at this stage! 42 miles down- 1117 miles to go.
